How WhatsApp’s 'troubles' may help this Google rival
Some might say that it’s late but finally there’s some serious conversation happening around user data and privacy. WhatsApp’s new privacy policy update has made people sit up and take note about how their data is being used. And it’s not just instant messaging apps that are seeing some kind of shift as browsers that support data privacy and security are also seeing spike in users. DuckDuckGo, a rival of Google Search, has reported that it has set a new record for maximum searches in a day.

According to a report by Phonearena, DuckDuckGo created a new one day record on January 11 with 102.2 million search requests. Interestingly, on January 1, the number of searches were close to 77.1 million per day but shot up to over 100 million in a day.

In fact, DuckDuckGo has seen number of searches increase by 62% in 2020 as it hit close to 24 billion searches.

Kamyl Bazbaz, DuckDuckGo vice president of communications, was quoted as saying in the report, “People are coming to us because they want more privacy, and it's generally spreading through word of mouth. People are looking for alternatives to the surveillance-tech business model.”

DuckDuckGo’s USP is that id doesn’t track any user data or share it with any third-party app. Google, on the other hand, has a history of collecting personal information and data of users — with consent — and that is used for online advertising.

Despite DuckDuckGo’s surge in daily search numbers, it remains a very minor player in the online search market. According to Statcounter, Google had 91.3% market share in December 2020 in the search market whereas DuckDuckGo had mere 0.6%. However, that was December and now privacy seems to be the buzzword for many users. WhatsApp’s woes might just end up giving a shot in the arm for players like DuckDuckGo.
