Ranipet railway station gets new lease of life

CHENNAI: Southern Railway on Wednesday loaded the first rake of fertilizers from Ranipet station after a gap of 25 years.
The rake of 21 BCN wagons would transport 1,300 tonne of fertilizers to Tadepalligudem and Dwarapudi in Andhra Pradesh.
Laid in 1858, the line between Chennai and Ranipet is one of the oldest lines in the country. The track between Walajah Road and Ranipet fell into disuse in 1995 due to poor patronage. The line was relaid as part of Tindivanam-Nagari new line project in 2012 but was not being used.
However, Chennai division completed work like welding, ballasting, packing and de-stressing to make it fit for goods traffic in November 2020.
