Tamil Nadu: Doctor jailed for three years for illegal abortions

CUDDALORE: Cuddalore district munsif cum judicial magistrate G Abarna on Tuesday convicted a doctor to three years of imprisonment for violating different provisions of Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act and the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971.
The magistrate also imposed a fine of 10,000 on the doctor. According to the prosecution, Neyveli-based Dr K Ramachandran, who was running a private nursing home, was booked on charges of disclosing the sex of the foetus and performing sex-selective abortions after a surprise raid at his nursing home by healthcare officials in May 2014.
The raid was conducted after a complaint forwarded by the then Perambalur district collector. Subsequently, the state medical council barred him from practice, based on the recommendation from the directorate of medical services in 2016. Sex determination tests are banned in the country to prevent female foeticide.
