The European Union has asked the Government of Uganda to respect freedom of expression and the right to peaceful and safe assembly.

The EU calls for free movement of all political actors and their supporters, reminding the government of its commitment to respect the rule of law and international obligations.

The demands are entailed in their statement on Thursday 14th January 2021 polls, where the union is gravely concerned by the continued harassment of political actors and infringement of their rights.

In a statement, EU also condemned the internet blackout which disrupted freedom of expression, access to information, affecting the regular economic and social activities.

The EU however commended that no major violent incidents were reported on Election Day, much as pre-election violence and murders were reported.

It also appealed to all parties to refrain from any form of violence.

This comes as NUP’s presidential candidate in the recent general polls Robert Kyagulanyi is under house arrest.
