No visible impact of 12 –hrs strike of Congress in Tripura

Agartala, Jan 18 (UNI) The dawn to dusk general strike called by Congress in Tripura today protesting against an attack on its president Pijush Kanti Biswas yesterday has not much impact in normal life. Except for a few shops and public buses in the capital city and urban areas, everything has been functioning usually and there was report of any violence.

According to police, there was no picketing in the city, bus terminuses and railway stations, as a result, the movement of vehicles, local trains and activities in the markets were almost normal. The flow of daily wage earners coming from outskirts to the city has no visible impact.

However, police headquarters sources said that adequate security measures have been put in place to keep the life normal across the state. The mobilisation of forces in sensitive locations was steeped up since last night to foil any tension and peace breaking move from any corner.

The Pradesh Congress leaders said that the party did not want to go for picketing to prevent the people rather it called the inner consciousness of the citizens to protest against the undemocratic and anti-people activities of BJP-IPFT government in the state. However, people largely supported the strike voluntarily, as it was not a political movement and Congress appealed to people to come out for restoring democracy, said senior party leader Tapas Dey.

A large number of Congress workers have gathered in front of party-state headquarters early in the morning and prevented the movement of vehicles from city roads despite having strong security cover. As many as six congressmen including its president Pijush Kanti Biswas and three police personnel were injured in an attack allegedly by BJP goons at Bishalgarh yesterday.

Meanwhile, opposition CPI-M alleged soon after the attack on Biswas, BJP cadres have attacked CPI-M Rajyasabha MP from Tripura Jharna Das Baidya along with his security personnel and three senior leaders of the party in separate incidents in Badharghat area of Agartala. They allegedly ransacked the house of MP and destroyed her properties in front of police.
