Gurgaon: A man died after his car fell off the Pahari railway overbridge (ROB) in Pataudi on Saturday, police said on Sunday.
The victim has been identified as Dinesh Kumar, they said. The contractor of the bridge and the Public Works Department (PWD) have been booked in the case.
On the day of the incident, Dinesh, a cab driver, left his home in Rewari at 6.30am, his brother Ransinh told police. At 8am, the family got a call stating that Dinesh met with an accident and has been admitted to Pataudi civil hospital. “I rushed to the hospital. My brother was declared dead. He had multiple injuries on face and head,” Ransinh said.
Ransinh then went to the accident spot. He then found that repair work was under way at the site. The police said one of the slabs of the ROB had fallen earlier last year and the repair work for the same had been allotted to a private contractor, Gurunanak Engineering.
The contractor did not place any barricade which led to the accident, an officer said, adding that the visibility was very low due to intense fog.
“A portion of the ROB was under construction and hence was barricaded. However, someone had removed the barricade, which led to the accident. We are looking into the matter and will take strict action against those responsible if any,” said Superintending Engineer, PWD, Rajeev Yadav.
An FIR has been registered at the Pataudi police station under relevant sections, including 279 and 304 (accounting for rash driving or riding in a public way and negligence causing death).
“As per the complaint from the family, we have registered a case against the Public Works Department as well as the contractor,” said the SHO of Pataudi police station. He added that they are currently investigating the matter and will take action accordingly.
Last week, a similar accident had taken place in Gurgaon when a 31-year-old man fell into a pit dug by NHAI near Radisson hotel near the Delhi border. The pit was dug as a part of the ongoing work for the U-turn near Ambience Mall.
NHAI officials had been booked in the case and the highway authority had begun an internal probe as well.
