Construction of Bailey bridge on Jammu-Srinagar National highway completed in 60 hours by BRO; holds train run

The Jammu-Srinagar highway has been closed for more than a week as the bridge at Kela Morh was blocked after one of its passways was damaged due to landslide.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) on Saturday said that the construction of a 110-feet Bailey Bridge at Kela Morh in Ramban on Jammu-Srinagar National highway has been completed in 60 hours.

According to the BRO, a trial run was carried out successfully. The Traffic resumed on the bridge in the evening as announced by  Brigadier IK Jaggi, chief Engineer project Beacon of BRO.

The Jammu-Srinagar highway has been closed for more than a week as the bridge at Kela Morh was blocked after one of its passways was damaged due to landslide.

The BRO had earlier said that the Bailey bridge will be ready within two days.

The trial run of the bridge was carried out at 2.30 pm on Saturday and the bridge was opened for regular traffic in the evening, the officials said. The launching of the bridge brought much-needed relief for people stranded at different locations.

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), the agency responsible for NH-44 (Jammu-Srinagar highway), and the civil administration had requested the BRO to assist in bridging the gap after the wall`s collapse, the officials said.

"After initial recce, the construction of the bridge commenced on January 14 at 7.30 AM. Led by Lt Col Varun Khare, Officer Commanding, the team of 99 RCC (road construction company), comprising six officers, 10 supervisors and 50 labourers, worked tirelessly for 60 hours," said one of the officials.
