While the vaccination programme is a welcome development, it is yet to be seen whether the government will enact a law to make it mandatory, as was done through the Compulsory Vaccination Act of 1892 to address the smallpox epidemic.

Synopsis

The 2020 Economic Survey states that India’s manufacturing and services sectors employ 27.5 crore. Of these, about 6.4 crore work in the organised sector. Very few employees will make it to the above Covid vaccination priority list. Naturally, employers are constantly reflecting on the question of ‘safe workplaces’, continued social distancing measures and calling the workforce back to the office.

With India starting the world’s largest Covid-19 vaccination drive on Saturday with the inoculation of almost two lakh healthcare and frontline workers, the scale of the operation that seeks to immunise more than 1.3 billion people is daunting. So far, vaccination is not mandatory, and the vaccination priority list is aligned with World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines.
