No announcements on border restrictions says D'Ambrosio

By Sumeyya Ilanbey

Victorian Energy and Environment Minister Lily D'Ambrosio said she had no announcements to make about easing border restrictions with New South Wales, but flagged the Andrews government would be satisfied with its northern neighbour following more days of no community transmission.

The Victorian government lifted border restrictions with Queensland on Saturday after the state recorded 14 days of no locally acquired cases, and indicated it would make an announcement about Sydney in coming days.

"It is fair to say that with every day that goes by where there are zero locally transmitted cases in other states, it is a day we get closer here in Victoria to be able to ease restrictions of people coming back into Victoria," Ms D'Ambrosio said on Sunday morning, before NSW revealed it recorded six new locally acquired cases of COVID-19, all close contacts of the western Sydney case reported on Saturday.

Later on Sunday morning, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said if the Victorian Premier Dan Andrews has hinted at an easing of border closures between the states, he has not spoken to her about the matter.

She said the opening of the border should have “occurred quite a while back because we don't have a hot spot in New South Wales.”

“We are, of course, dealing with a result of an outbreak from a month ago, but I think everybody would agree that closing a border of such significance is a really big deal and I stress that we waited until Victoria had in excess of, I think it was 180 cases," she said.

“They had the day after we announced the border closure. Just to put things into perspective, those decisions are difficult ones, they affect a lot of people and I would just ask people to really think about those decisions before they're taken.”
