CCpur, January 16 2021: The Churachandpur Forest Division has today launched an awareness campaign on Chief Minister's Green Manipur Mission with village chiefs and private landowners in the audience at the District Training Hall, Tuibong.

Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, N Sonzalian; Thangboi Gangte, Additional DC CCpur and DFO CCpur Esther Laltankim Serto addressed the event that emphasized the participation of village chiefs to successfully transform the State into a green state.

Addressing the event, N Sonzalian said the CM's Green Manipur Mission was launched on June 22, 2019 to turn community land, farmland, jhum land and wasteland that are located outside Reserved Forest Area or Notified Forest area into a tree-covered green area.

With 16,847 square km of the State's area or three-fourth of the total area reportedly covered by forest, the National Forest Policy envision the hill districts to have at least 2/3 of its area under forest.

The target appears well achieved when the records were taken into consideration but in reality, the quality of forest was weak except for about 1/3 of the area that has thick forest cover, he claimed.

Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests also said the latest Forest Survey report in Pherzawl and CCpur districts shows that 85.77 percent of the total area is covered by forest.

He, however, argued that in reality the forest area in the two districts will only be about 6 percent of the total area.

Calling on the chiefs and private landowners to steadfastly participate and implement the Green Manipur Mission, he said that requisite funds for implementing the mission will be transferred to the participating villages, unlike other missions that are implemented by the department.
