Two gored to death in Sivaganga at Manjuvirattu event

MADURAI: Two spectators were gored to death in the Siravayal Manjuvirattu event that took place in Sivaganga district on Saturday.
They have been identified as S Bose, 62, from Periyamachipatti and C Periyakaruppan,80, from Kallipattu.
A police officer said that they were gored by 'kattumaadu', the ones released outside the arena without prior intimation. Bulls ploughed through the crowd, who were scattered all around the venue and attacked the elderly persons.
They were immediately taken to nearby hospital, where doctors declared them as 'dead on arrival.'
The Nachiyapuram police have received separate complaints to register a case.
Around 50 people including tamers and spectators suffered injuries during the event. They were taken to hospital for treatment. 13 of them were referred to medical college hospital as the nature of injuries was serious.
Siravayal is located near Tirupattur in Sivaganga district. The Manjuvirattu event conducted every year is a renowned throughout the state. Bulls, tamers and spectators would visit from various districts such as Dindigul, Madurai, Pudukottai and Trichy apart from Sivaganga.
Police sources said that in total 120 bulls were registered for the event. However, more than 250 'kattumaadu' were released outside the arena. 82 bull tamers took part in the event.
