Actor Vijay Sethupati, who is basking in the success of his recent film 'Master', has found himself in the middle of a controversy on a day when he celebrates his 43rd birthday.

A photo of the 'Aandavan Kattalai' star celebrating his special day and cutting a birthday cake with a sword earlier this week, recently surfaced on social media and ever since has been going viral on the Internet for all the wrong reasons.

For the unversed, earlier this week, the 'Master' star had celebrated his birthday on the sets of his upcoming film with director Ponram.

Subsequently, after netizens pointed out that the actor had committed an offence and should be arrested, given that the Chennai police has on earlier occasions arrested goons for using a sword to cut their birthday cakes, the actor issues a detailed statement, apologising for his action and promising to be careful in future. He also added that his action did set a bad example and that he was extremely apologetic about it.

On Saturday, Vijay Sethupathi took to his Twitter handle to issue the statement. It roughly translates as, "My heartfelt thanks to film personalities and fans who wished me on my birthday. Three days ago, a photo which was taken during my birthday celebration has become a controversy now. In the photo, I had cut my birthday cake with a sword. I am going to act in director Ponram's film, in which the sword plays an important role. Since I celebrated my birthday with Ponram and team, I used the sword to cut my cake. Many pointed out that this is a bad example. From hereon, I will be careful. If I had hurt anyone, I apologise and regret my action."

Meanwhile, 'Master', starring Thalapathy Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi, has grossed over Rs 50 crore in Tamil Nadu alone within the first three days and is all set to be remade in Hindi.
