Michail Antonio scored his first goal since October as West Ham defeated a Burnley side lacking a cutting edge, at London Stadium.

The 30-year-old forward, who coming into the game had only made four appearances since October because of hamstring problems, slotted home Pablo Fornals' cross in the ninth minute.

The Hammers were the greater attacking threat and went close again when Angelo Ogbonna's header came off the woodwork, before Antonio's effort was cleared off the line by Ben Mee.

Sean Dyche's Clarets never really got going as an attacking force, although they improved marginally after the break following Dwight McNeil's introduction. The midfielder produced a cross that came off the bar while Mee sent a header a foot wide.

Brighton's win at Leeds means Burnley are now down to 17th, four points above the drop zone, and West Ham are up to eighth.

Moyes' entertainers shining for West Ham

David Moyes' version of the 'West Ham way' seems to be doing the trick at the moment.

The Hammers have 10 more points than they did at this stage last season, and have scored six more goals. The manager likened himself to a headteacher this week, stating his side "must do better", but many will think his players have already surpassed pre-season expectations.

Key to this healthier return has been the addition of creative and goalscoring midfielders such as Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek, who have become vital cogs in the side a year after signing, while £30m capture Said Benrahma appears to be gradually rediscovering his Brentford form.

Winger Bowen, who cost £18m, has an incredible engine and against the Clarets appeared to act as a second striker to Antonio because of the amount of times he found himself in the area. It was his good work on the left of the area which allowed Fornals to provide the cross for the opener.

Antonio, 30, was already important to Moyes and is now even more so after the Sebastien Haller experiment failed. The former winger scored a glut of goals towards the end of last season and began this campaign well before hamstring injuries hampered his progress.

He kept his cool for his goal when Burnley's defenders did not and later saw a header cleared off the line.

If he can stay fit for the rest of the season then expect a glowing end-of-term report from Moyes.

Burnley fire blanks again

Dyche has been in this position before with Burnley, but this time he might not have to rely on his man-management skills to pull the team out of the mire.

New owners have promised him funds for January signings, with reports linking them with two midfielders.external-link They certainly need better service for their front men.

Ashley Barnes failed to produce an effort on goal while Chris Wood's only strike was a first-half drive which drifted a foot wide. Burnley have now failed to score in six of their past seven away league games, and they have only managed nine goals in the league so far this season.

Fans should not panic yet, but it could be a different mood with matches against Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City to come in the next three weeks.

What's next?

West Ham host West Brom on Tuesday (18:00 GMT) and Burnley are at Liverpool on Thursday (20:00 GMT).

  • Really need to start putting more chances away, but I’m happy with three points.

    Aside from a couple of errant touches at the end, I think that was Fornal’s best game in a West Ham shirt.

    That was a game we’d have lost in the past, or drawn at the most. Grinding out results may not be pretty but it’s getting us the points.

      I've seen a bit of Fornals since he signed. He was both lightweight AND off the pace when he signed. He's still a bit lightweight in the challenge, but his work-rate is impressive. He doesn't have the the occasional genius of a Lanzini, but he's much more effective & consistent.

      Not the flair WH fans might have expected, but a good, solid team player. I think he's worth his place.

  • Another good solid performance by WHU, just need to be a little more clinical in front of goal. WHU need another striker hopefully get one in the Jan transfer window. Keep going you Hammers and possible top 6 finish this season, but PL so tight could be as low as 10th. COYI

  • Entertaining game today end to end stuff! Shame yaramalenko ddnt look late in the game and set up Antonio and a bit more composure in front of goal! but another win with a clean sheet! Think we need another striker to take a bit of responsibility off Antonio!! All in all good performance tho

  • Not a supporter but good to see the Hammers having a solid season so far.

    Burnley still look like they're wading thorough treacle most of the time but they'll be fine this season.

  • Respect the three points, but The Hammers are a lot better without the ball than with it. Criminally wasteful in possession. Burnley always give us a hard time, so I’m very happy to have come through that one.

  • Should have been 4 or 5 some awful decision making from West Ham in the final third , a deserved win with really only Dwight McNeil coming out with any credit for Burnley. Dawson outstanding at centre half but it wasn’t the best of games

  • Burnley are a tough team to beat; 1-0 is a decent result whoever you are. West Ham perhaps earnt a second goal, but one was enough in the end. The Other Clarets were tough to break down, but didn't offer much threat, so one or two, the result was the right one.

    Burnley will be lower half this season, but they're under no real threat of relegation. WHU? Could finish anywhere from 4th to 11th!

  • Well done Hammers but please try to add a couple more goals to calm the nerves of us fans. Do what you can to hang onto Rice but if he wants to go then so be it. Let's not have another Payet or Arno fiasco.

  • West Ham once again making the most out of very little. Only lost 3 games in last 15, with potentially a nice run of games coming up. Need a decent striker in this transfer window if any chance of a Europa place.

      The only thing he's won in 22 years years of management was the second division with Preston North End, somehow I doubt it, Martinez won the FA cup with Wigan. I think he was more likely to accomplish his only winning feat at United should he have continued rather than the PL.
