Bengal joined rest of the country in largest vaccination drive

Kolkata, Jan 16 (UNI) West Bengal on Saturday joined the rest of the country in the
largest vaccination drive in the world against COVID-19 with a doctor of a private
hospital receiving the first shot.
The vaccination programme started around 10.30 am at 212 session sites, including
medical colleges, urban primary healthcare centres and a few private hospitals, a health
official said.
State Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said that Chief Minister Mamata
Banerjee has been monitoring the process since morning.
The health secretary has been receiving regular calls from her,” he said.
Mr Hakim said, “It’s a thrilling day today. We are looking forward to a Corona-free
West Bengal, a Corono-free India and a Corona-free world.”
State Minister for Labour Nirmal Maji also received the Covishield vaccine at the
Kolkata Medical College and Hospital, the officials said.
Doctor Bipasha Seth, the first person to receive the shot, said, "It's a great day for
the humanity. I feel delighted after receiving the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the nationwide rollout of the COVID-19
vaccination drive via video conferencing earlier in the day.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issued a formal statement on Saturday, requesting
the Government of India to supply an adequate number of Covid-19 vaccines for not
only frontline workers but also for the people of West Bengal.
The people of Bengal should get vaccines free of cost as early as possible and the
state government is willing to bear the financial burden, the statement issued by
Ms Banerjee stated.
The city has been allocated the highest number of 93,500 doses, followed by
North 24 Parganas district (47,000) and Murshidabad (37,500).
