KOCHI: Finance minister Thomas Isaac said that the first phase of Kerala Fibre Optic Network (KFON), which is the mega Infrastructure project of the Government of Kerala aiming to build a high-speed, reliable and scalable fibre network across the state, will be completed in February. He said that the project will boost the proposed revolution in the education sector in Kerala by supporting the development of digital infrastructure.
Isaac said that the availability of high-speed internet is essential for digitizing the education sector and KFON will see to it. All houses will have internet facility through K-FON project, which will be fully completed by July. The people belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) will have free high-speed internet (between 10mbps and 1gbps) through the project. He said the internet will not be a monopoly for any service provider in Kerala.
Isaac added that as part of the digitization of school education, laptops will be available to all students in weaker sections at reduced price. “At least one laptop will be made available to each household. School digitization project has been completed by KITE and it will continue. Laptops will be given at half the price to students belonging to Antyodaya, Fishing community etc. Also, all other BPL communities will be given a 25% subsidy in buying the laptops.
