An SBI customer can apply for the savings account cheque book either by visiting his/her home branch or via Net banking facility. Here are the steps to apply for a cheque book online.

A State Bank of India (SBI) customer can apply for a cheque book by visiting the bank branch or by using the Net banking facility.

As per the bank's website, "You can request for a cheque book online. Cheque book can be requested for any of your Savings, Current, Cash Credit, and Overdraft accounts. You can opt for cheque books with 25, 50 or 100 cheque leaves. You can either collect it from branch or request your branch to send it by post or courier. You can opt to get the cheque book delivered at your registered address or you can provide an alternate address. Cheque books will be dispatched within 3 working days from the date of request."

As per a tweet by SBI on its official Twitter handle, "Use our Internet Banking service and request for a cheque book delivery to any address of your choice in a few simple steps."

Here is the step-by-step process of applying for a cheque book online.

Steps to apply for SBI cheque book online
Step 1: Visit www.onlinesbi.com and login to your account.
Step 2: Once logged in, click on 'Request & Enquiries' tab.
Step 3: A new webpage will open on your system. From the options available, select 'Cheque book services'. Then select 'Cheque Book Request'.
Step 4: Select the account for which you want to apply for a cheque book. There are other drop-down menus such as multi-city option, number of cheque book, number of cheque leaves that you are required to fill.

As per the Online SBI portal, multicity cheques will be issued on your request on this portal. If you want a normal cheque book, you will have to contact the home branch.

Charges might be levied depending on the type of account you have with the bank.
  • Charges will be Rs 3 per cheque leaf for all savings bank accounts having quarterly average balance (QAB) as on the previous quarter-end below Rs25,000.
  • Charges will be Rs 2 per cheque leaf for accounts having QAB Rs 25, 000 and above as on the previous quarter-end.
  • 50 Leaves free per year for senior citizen/salary accounts and 20 leaves free per year for other P-Segment/AGL Segment customers, as per the bank's website.
Step 5: Once the required details are filled in, click on 'Submit'.
Step 6: Verify the details of your cheque book request. Select the delivery address at which you wish to receive the cheque book. There are three options: Registered Address, Last Available Dispatch Address and New Address.
You can also decide whether you wish to share contact details with the courier agent or not.
Step 7: Click on 'Submit'.

Your request for new cheque book has been submitted. The cheque book will be delivered to you soon on the address chosen by you while submitting the request.
