Rahul watches Jallikattu, says he will always stands with Tamil people to protect their culture

Madurai, Jan 14 (UNI) Former AICC President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday watched the renowned “Jallikattu” event at Avaniyapuram in this district, as part of the party’s “Rahulin Tamizh Vanakkam” (Rahul’s Tamil welcome) -- an initiative to show his closeness with the people of Tamil Nadu.
Mr Gandhi, who flew from New Delhi to Madurai in a special flight, watched the bull taming event for 35 minutes from the dais along with Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, TNCC President K.S.Alagiri, DMK youth wing Secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin and others.
Later, addressing the spectators, Mr.Gandhi said it was a lovely experience to see Tamil culture and history in action. I am happy to see that Jallikattu was being conducted by ensuring the safety of both the bulls and the bull tamers.
“I have specifically come here because Tamil language, culture and history are essential for the future of India and needs to be respected by everyone in India.''
“I have come here to give a message to those people who think that they can run a roughshod over the Tamil people and push aside Tamil language and Tamil culture,” he said without naming anyone.
Mr Gandhi said he has received tremendous love and affection from the people of Tamil Nadu and it is his duty to stand with them in protecting their history and culture. I have come here also to learn about your culture, your feelings and history, he added.
It was announced that two motorcycles would be presented on behalf of Mr Gandhi for the best bull tamer and the best bull.
Earlier, Mr Alagiri stated that Mr.Gandhi’s visit was also to give moral support to farmers across the country, who are protesting against the three farm bills and to celebrate the culture and heritage of the Tamil people.
It may be recalled that the Jallikattu event was banned by the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre in 2011, when the Environment Ministry issued a notification banning the use of bulls as performing animals.
