Nagpur: Admitting that hawkers’ issue was a big problem for the civic administration, new mayor Dayashankar Tiwari said that a smart hawker zone would be set up in each of the six assembly segments in the city.
Tiwari was addressing the ‘Meet the press’ organized by Nagpur Press Club. He said that hawkers will have a dress code and they would be issued registration numbers. “Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will charge registration fee from hawkers. It will use this money to provide amenities in the hawker zones. Of this amount, 20% will be used for advertising the zones,” he said.
Replying to a query, Tiwari said that even though number of Marathi medium schools run by NMC had reduced significantly, the remaining ones would not close down. “We will take the help of private institutions in reviving the Marathi schools. Even if there are two students in a section, it will not close down,” he said.
The BJP leader promised to start NMC English medium schools in each of the six assembly segments from the next academic session. At the same time, a new policy would be formulated for Marathi and Hindi medium schools.
One of the dream projects of the new mayor is to provide marriage certificate to the couple on the wedding day itself. “If a couple informs NMC about the marriage eight days in advance, NMC staffers would go to the wedding venue and provide them the marriage certificate there,” said Tiwari.
In order to increase revenue, Tiwari plans to impose an advertisement tax on shops on the basis of size of their display boards. “This will rake in about Rs10 crore for NMC,” he said.
The new mayor plans to start a mineral water plant. “A bottle will cost Rs5 and will be available at the railway station and the airport,” he told the media.
