Awareness campaign on prevention and control of forest fire held

Ukhrul, January 12 2021: A one day awareness campaign on prevention and control of forest fire for the villages of Phungyar block was organized by DFO, Kamjong at the community hall of Phungyar village, Kamjong district, yesterday.

Addressing the programme, DFO Kamjong SW Suisa stressed on the need of forest preservation in order to save the environment and prevent climate change.

The DFO informed that every year more than 2000 hectares of forest land including jhum cultivations were destroyed in Kamjong district alone.

The State Government has also issued orders that any individual person caught for setting forest fire will be booked under National Security Act (NSA), he added.

SW Suisa further mentioned that a cash reward ranging from Rs 50000 to Rs 100000 would be given for forest preservation under the Fire Protection Management Scheme (FPMS).

MC Ngachonmi Rtd RFO also enlightened the villagers on the harmful effect of forest fire.

Later, a discussion to streamline policies on how to prevent forest fire through participation of the general public was held.

The programme was attended by village chiefs, youth and women leaders arid forest officers.
