BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The White House has approved a major disaster declaration for Louisiana's destruction from Hurricane Zeta in October, the governor's office announced.
Gov. John Bel Edwards' office said Tuesday that the declaration signed by President Donald Trump will help provide direct aid to people and communities impacted by the storm, which made landfall Oct. 28 in Lafourche Parish as a Category 3 hurricane.
Households in Jefferson, Lafourche, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard and Terrebonne parishes will be eligible for individual assistance from the federal government under the disaster declaration. Jefferson, Lafourche, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard and St. Charles parishes will be eligible for reimbursement for debris removal costs, according to Edwards' office, while 35 parishes will be able to receive federal aid to help with repair of disaster-damaged public facilities.
Zeta struck Louisiana after the state was still digging out of the destruction of two other 2020 hurricanes, Laura and Delta.
Edwards thanked Trump for the assistance.
“Zeta brought considerable damage to the impacted areas. This will allow the state and our federal partners to continue assisting families with recovery from these events," the Democratic governor said in a statement.
