NEW DELHI: Death by avian influenza among various breeds of birds has caused panic among people as they avoid consumption of poultry products and meat. The government, however, has assured that bird flu is common but can differ in intensity emphasizing that authorities are able to cap the infection every year.
Here are the highlights:
* Atul Chaturvedi, the secretary of the Union government’s department of animal husbandry, dairy and fisheries on Tuesday said that avian flu occurs every year when migratory birds travel to India and is declared bird flu-free subsequently.
* On the sudden outbreak of avian influenza in parts of the country, Chaturvedi said that the outbreaks usually happen in winter months, starting from September-October till February-March.
* The government urged not to create unnecessary panic as some years, the bird mortalities are more and in others less.
* Bird flu or avian influenza scare is having a big impact on poultry business in Bihar with chicken sales dipping by 50-75 per cent across the state.
* Bihar government has also alerted the administrations of all the 38 districts in Bihar to keep a tab on the developments.
* In Maharashtra's Murumba village, 5,550 birds are scheduled to be till Wednesday while 4,000 birds were culled in Kendrewadi and Sukni villages in Latur district on Tuesday.
* On Tuesday, more than 900 bird deaths were reported from Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan.
* As many as nine states across India have reported Bird flu cases.
