The village head said that the girl had taken her goats for grazing to a field outside the village with some other children.

Three people have been arrested for allegedly assaulting and raping a 16-year-old hearing and speech impaired girl in Madhubani district. Two of the accused allegedly damaged her eyes with a pointed wooden stick, causing serious injuries in one eye, police said.

The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon when the Class 10 student, the daughter of a daily wager, went to the riverside near her village to fetch leaves for her goats, police said. One of the accused, from the same village as the girl, allegedly assaulted and raped her, according to the victim’s complaint. The accused was joined by his two friends, who also tried to allegedly rape the girl, who fought back, police said.

According to the FIR filed at the local police station, the girl’s brother alleged that his sister was attacked by two of the accused with a pointed wooden stick after she was raped.

The local PHC in-charge said, “The girl has suffered serious injury in one eye. Her second eye is also affected. She needs to get treated by an eye specialist.”

The girl was brought to a hospital in Patna from a medical institute in Darbhanga for treatment on Tuesday night.

The local police station in-charge said, “The girl was found unconscious in a field. Some villagers admitted her to the village primary health centre (PHC)…we immediately arrested three persons, all local residents.”

Deputy Superintendent of Police Arun Kumar Singh said, “All the three have been booked for rape and also under POCSO Act provisions since the girl is a minor. A medical examination has been done. The report is awaited.”
