Qualcomm unveils larger and faster in-screen fingerprint reader, coming to smartphones this year
US-based chipmaker Qualcomm has unveiled a new and improved in-display fingerprint sensor, called the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2.
In comparison to its predecessor, this sensor is said to be available in new sizes that are 50% faster and 77% larger than first generation sensor.
“Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 1 was 4x9mm (surface area 36mm2). Gen 2 will debut with a sensor that is 8x8 (64mm2), which is 77% larger than Gen 1,” said Qualcomm in a press statement.
With a larger size, Qualcomm claims that the sensor will be able to capture 1.7x more biometric data, coupled with 50% faster processing than the previous generation sensor.
Besides making them bigger and faster, Qualcomm has also made the sensor equipped to scan fingerprints through solid surfaces like glass and metal even while a user’s fingers are wet.
Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 are expected to debut in mobile devices in early 2021 and the first device to offer this could be from the Samsung Galaxy S21 series smartphones. This is because when in 2018, Qualcomm had launched the first-gen Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor, a number of Samsung Galaxy devices — Galaxy S10 series, Galaxy Note 10 series, Galaxy S20 series, and the Galaxy Note 20 series — came with this sensor.
