Veteran Communist leader Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi passes away at 97

Patna, Jan 12 (UNI) Veteran nonagenarian Communist leader and former MLA Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi died here last night after prolonged illness. He was 97.
Mr Vidyarthi breathed his last in local nursing home where he was admitted after his condition deteriorated. His wife had died earlier.
He is survived by three sons and two daughters.
Mr Vidyarthi had played vital role in strengthening the Communist movement in Bihar in fifties and contested Lok Sabha elections unsuccessfully in 1952 on CPI ticket but emerged victorious in Assembly elections in 1977 and 1980 from Nawada seat on CPI(M) ticket.
Known for his commitment towards improving the lot of poor, farmers and working class, he spent his life in simplicity.
Mr Vidyarthi who had started his political career in CPI but shifted to CPI(M) after its division in 1964. He was elected state secretary of CPI(M) for several terms.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar condoled the death of veteran Communist leader and aid his death had caused void in political horizon.
Deputy General Secretary of Bihar unit of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) Ghazanfar Nawab expressed his deep shock over demise of veteran leader and described it as end of era in communist movement. His contribution to Communist movement would always be remembered, he remarked.
