Kerala reports 5,507 new COVID cases, 4,270 recoveries: Health Minister

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 12 (UNI) Covid-19 was detected in 5,507 persons in Kerala on Tuesday while 4,270 patients have recovered from the disease, Health Minister KK Shailaja said.
"In the last 24 hours, Covid was not confirmed in one person who recently came to Kerala from the UK (total 55 now) and their samples have been sent to NIV, Pune for further testing. So far, six people who came from the UK were diagnosed with the genetically modified virus," the Minister said in a press release here this evening.
Meanwhile, 25 recent deaths were confirmed today as due to Covid taking the death toll in the state to 3,347.
She said 64,614 samples were tested during the last 24 hours and the test positivity rate is 8.52 %. Till now, a total of 85,51,792 samples have been sent for testing.
Today, one place was declared as new hotspot even as five areas were excluded. There are 436 hotspots in Kerala now.
