HUBBALLI: City-based century-old Gymkhana Club will host Gymkhana Premier League (GPL) badminton tournament (Season 7) from January 16 to February 27.
The theme of this year event is ‘Save tree — Protect environment’. All team jerseys will have the wordings of the themealong with team logos. Some of the participating teams are Kittu’s Jaguar, Vivek’s Leg Breakers, Satish Shetty/ JP’s The Kings, Uday/ Prakash’s 8PM Victors.
Badminton players of Gymkhana Club had started GPL on the lines of Indian Badminton League in 2014.
Fifty-two players will vy for honours, with each team comprising 13 members. Matches are played only on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday. Some of the noted players are Vishwanath Uppin, Ajit Javali, Vinay Javali, Shital Gotadaki, Dr Yogi Datta,Indian Railways sportsman Shihab, and Dr K Shantala, runner-up at All-India Masters’ Championship.
Gymkhana Club secretary Jagadish Kalyanshettar said, “Bidding for players is over, and teams are training hard to win the tournament. Planting saplings to protect the environment is the need of the hour. Besides creating awareness on Covid-19, we will also spread the word on environment.”
