Eleven people have died and at least seven have been hospitalised after consuming poisonous liquor in Madhya Pradesh's Morena district, SP Anurag Sujania said on Tuesday. The seven people, who have been hospitalised, are said to be in critical condition.
The incident happened in two separate villages of Morena. While three people died in Pahawali village, seven lost their lives in Manpur village in Morena.
Seven more have been hospitalised at a local clinic in Morena. One person, who is said to be in a critcal condition, has been referred to Gwalior for treatment.
According to the police, the liquor was locally made and sourced. The people started vomiting late in the night after consuming it, following which they were taken to a hospital. While 10 people died while on way to the hospital, one died at the hospital in Morena.
The relatives of the dead created a ruckus at the Morena district hospital where the post-mortems of the dead was being conducted.
"The relatives are demanding to take the bodies by a tractor while the administration is insisting that they take the bodies by ambulance," police said.
The exact source of the spurious liquor has not been found.
According to villagers who reached the Morena district hospital early Tuesday morning, locally made liquor is easily available in the area and is sold in connivance with the excise department and police officials.
"They talk about taking action when such tragedies occur but why can’t they stop the sale? Officers of the excise and police department are actively involved,” an angry villager at Morena district hospital said.
On Sunday, a 55-year-old man died and 143 people, including women, were hospitalised after allegedly consuming adulterated toddy in Telangana's Vikarabad district.
Many of those who fell sick complained of giddiness, nausea and shivers. They were rushed to the district government hospital. When the number of people coming to the hospital increased, it was found that they had all consumed spurious liquor.
