Imphal, January 10 2021: Election to the six Autonomous District Councils may be held in March/April this year but Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections would be delayed on account of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Well placed sources informed that the Tribal Affairs and Hills Department has given its consent to the State Election Commission for ADC election.

Notably, the extended term of the incumbent ADCs expired in November last year.

Electoral rolls for the six ADCs of Churachandpur, Senapati, Ukhrul, Chandel, Tamenglong and Sadar Hills would be published within the current month, said the sources.

As such, the State Election Commission may announce the election schedule shortly.

There are 24 District Council Constituencies in each of the six ADCs and altogether 144 Members would be elected.

On the other hand, MAHUD Department, citing the prevailing COVID-19 situation, has written to the State Election Commission to delay the election for 23 Municipal Councils and three Nagar Panchayats by sometime.

The term of office of the 23 Municipal Councils and the three Nagar Panchayats is expiring next month.

Concerned Electoral Registration Officers have already published draft electoral rolls which would be utilised in the Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections.
