Urban Local Bodies: HP Cong claims victory of party-supported candidates in 70 pc

Shimla, Jan 11 (UNI) The Congress on Monday claimed victory for party-supported candidates in nearly 70 per cent seats of the Urban Local Bodies election, which was conducted on Sunday for 50 urban local bodies.
Addressing a press conference here, Congress state President Kuldeep Singh Rathore claimed victories, including in Shimla, Mandi, Solan, Kangra, Chamba and Kullu districts.
The party-supported candidates emerged victorious in a number of Nagar Panchayat and Municipal Councils as well, as they got clear majority in several urban local bodies and also managed to win by wafer-thin majority in the number of local bodies.
The party managed to win elections in Parwanoo, Arki, Theog, Kumersen, Rampur, Rohru, Mandi and other Urban Local Bodies, defeating the BJP-supported candidates. Mr Rathore said the claims of BJP sweeping the ULBs poll were not true and highly misleading.
The party managed to come to power in Theog Municipal Council after a gap of 25 years and its supported candidates would also give a tough fight to the opposition candidates in the coming Zila Parishad, Block Development Councils, Panchayat Samiti and Gram Panchayat elections, he added.
Charging the BJP of misusing government machinery to influence the voters, Mr Rathore said that people, by turning out in large numbers and voting for the Congress-supported candidates, exposed and rejected the ruling party by voting against its candidates.
Many senior leaders of BJP and Ministers were rattled due to the victory of Congress-supported and independent candidates and trying to allure them by various means, he alleged.
Congress will not allow the BJP to murder democracy and strict vigil was being kept on its supported candidates to stop any kind of horse-trading, said the Congress leader.
The party also blamed the ruling party of trying to influence the election in their favour before voting by tempering with the election roaster and voting lists.
He alleged that attempts have been made by the ruling BJP, so that the Congress-supported candidates move out of the fray, to secure votes for themselves.
The way the state government prepared the election roaster for the ULBs poll on the alleged directions of party units exposed the role of ruling dispensation to tamper with the free and fair poll, he further alleged.
