Land Rover sold a total of 6,931 Defenders in the U.S. in a span of seven years in the 1990s. With the Defender's return to U.S. dealerships last year, the automaker managed to top that figure in less than seven months.
Although Jaguar Land Rover's 2020 sales results won't be made public until sometime this week, Automotive News has learned that the British automaker notched 9,115 sales of the redesigned Defender 110 from June through December.
The figure might have been higher had the launch not been slowed by the pandemic.
Just as production was ramping up at the Defender plant in Nitra, Slovakia, last spring, the factory had to close for six weeks.
Land Rover should easily crush the Defender's 2020 sales record this year, particularly with the expected arrival of the lower-priced, three-door Defender 90 in the spring.
