AAP Delhi MLA Somnath Bharti arrested for his comment in Amethi, ink thrown at him

Lucknow, Jan 11 (UNI) Former Delhi minister and current AAP MLA of Malviya Nagar in Delhi Somnath Bharti was arrested by the UP police on Monday. Earlier, ink was thrown at him in Jais.

The MLA, against whom an FIR had been filed in Jagdishpur on Sunday for allegedly “using derogatory language” against State Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, was arrested in Jais even as another FIR was lodged against him in Jais for obstructing the police on Monday.

The action led to sharp reactions from AAP members, with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal saying that AAP’s campaign against UP’s schools had upset the state CM. "Yogiji, our MLA Somnath Bharti was going to see your government school but you had ink thrown on him. He was then arrested. Are your schools really in such a poor condition? Why do you get so scared if someone goes to see your schools? Improve your schools. If you do not know how to do it, then ask Manish Sisodia (Delhi’s education minister),” he tweeted.
In videos of the incident, Mr Bharti could be seen telling the police, which had gone to arrest him in connection with Sunday’s FIR, that Yogi would not going to return to power. Seconds later, a man can be seen throwing ink at him and saying that Yogi will return to power. While he was being led away by the police chanting slogans of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai', Bharti can be seen running after him and also had to be restrained by the police.

SP Rae Bareli, Shlok Kumar, said that the Delhi MLA ''misbehaved'' with police station in-charge of Kotwali while Jagdishpur police had gone to arrest him in Sunday’s case. “Bharti abused CM Yogi Adityanath and also manhandled our inspector. As a result, FIR under charges of obstruction to public servant on duty along with other charges is being registered,” said Kumar. The officer also that police teams were enquiring about the ink throwing incident.

AAP Rajya Sabha MP and UP in-charge Sanjay Singh called the CM a 'dictator'. "When AAP raised questions about the poor conditions of schools and hospitals in UP, Adityanath ji has started identifying AAP leaders and had former minister Somnath Bharti attacked and then arrested," Singh said.

By Monday afternoon, party state chief Sabhajeet Singh, along with lawyers and other party volunteers, left for Jagdishpur where Bharti was learnt to have been taken by the police.

In December, shortly after AAP declared its intention to contest the 2022 assembly elections in UP, Delhi deputy CM Sisodia took up a challenge by UP ministers and reached Lucknow to debate with them on development in Delhi and UP. He too was stopped from visiting a government school with police claiming that they had no prior intimation of his programme.
