TN to provide free 2 GB data daily to college students

Chennai, Jan 10 (UNI) Chief Minister Edappadi K.Palaniswami on Sunday announced that the State government will issue free data cards to provide 2 GB free data per day to more than nine lakh college students for four months from January to attend online classes.



In a statement issued here, Mr.Palaniswami said all colleges including arts and science, engineering and polytechnic institutes were conducting online classes in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. Though colleges have reopened for final year Undergraduate and Postgraduate students, the majority of them were holding online classes.



In order to enable the students to attend the online classes, the government has decided to give free data cards with a usage capacity of 2 GB per day from January to April, this year.



Mr.Palaniswami said the data cards will be issued to 9,69,047 students studying in government colleges, government aided arts and science colleges, engineering colleges, polytechnic colleges, besides students receiving scholarships in self financing colleges through the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Ltd (ELCOT).



Stating that the government is providing free laptops to students of government and aided colleges enabling them to get computer skills, he requested them to use free data for online learning.
