Man dead in western Sydney shooting in suspected targeted attack
A man has died following a shooting in western Sydney in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Emergency services were called to Fairfield's shopping district about 2.40am following reports of a shooting on William Street.
The 34-year-old man was found with gunshot wounds. Paramedics attempted to revive the man but he died at the scene.
Officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command have established a crime scene, resulting in the closure of sections of William Street and Harris Street.
Acting Superintendent Glenn Fitzgerald said the dead man was "well known" to police and they believe the attack was targeted.
"This is a violent attack on a suburban street and is totally unacceptable behaviour," he said.
A number of the man's family members attended the scene and are assisting police with their enquiries.
A "significant investigation" is under way to identify suspects. Mr Fitzgerald said.
Police have advised the community to avoid the area while the crime scene is in place.
The Homicide Squad will assist local officers in their investigations.
