MANGALURU: Unidentified miscreants set two makeshift beef stalls ablaze in Olapete, Thokottu, in the early hours of Saturday. A case has been registered at Ullal police station.
Vinay A Gaonkar, DCP (crime and traffic), said several temporary shops, which will soon be shifted to a permanent place, were operating in Olapete, and they included a few beef stalls.
N Shashi Kumar, police commissioner, Mangaluru, along with a team of cops and officials from other departments, visited the spot on Saturday. Ayyub Manchila, vice-president, Ullal City Municipal Council, said all the shops were running under a valid licence. The incident may have taken place around 3am. New arrangements will be made for the vendors.
Khader demands action
Mangaluru MLA UT Khader demanded that merchants who were selling beef at Olapete be allowed to continue their business at the same place and those who set fire to their stalls should be arrested immediately. “Miscreants who want to disrupt harmony in society were behind the incident. They should be nabbed at the earliest. I have already spoken to the police commissioner,” he added.
SDPI, Mangaluru constituency unit, has condemned the incident.
