Coimbatore man ends life after losing Rs 7 lakh in online gambling

COIMBATORE: A 29-year-old man, who lost more than Rs 7 lakh in online gambling, ended his life by jumping in front of a speeding train near Kongu Main Road in Tirupur district of Tamil Nadu on January 5, police said.
The deceased has been identified as S Elvin Fredric, 29, of Ilango Nagar at Avarampalayam in Coimbatore city.
On January 5, an unidentified man’s body was found on the railway track in Tirupur. The Government Railway Police (GRP) sent the body to the mortuary of Tirupur Government Medical College and Hospital. The police tried to trace the identity of the deceased.
Meanwhile, Elvin’s mother S Elizabeth, 60, lodged a man missing complaint with the Peelamedu (law&order) police on January 6. In her complaint, Elizabeth stated that she hailed from Nedunkulam village in Sathankulam in Tuticorin district. Her son Elvin Fredric, who pursued ITI and was working part-time at a private engineering firm and full time at another private firm in Coimbatore. He was staying in a rental house at Avarampalayam. She was also staying with her son.
Elizabeth went to her hometown on January 3 night, and her son was alone at her home. She returned to Ilangao Nagar at Avarampalayam on January 5 morning and did not find her son. She inquired with his friends and her relatives. But she was not able to trace the whereabouts of Elvin.
Elizabeth mentioned in the complaint that her son had earlier gone missing twice -- in 2019 and 2020 -- had returned home within two days. Her had attempted to suicide once, she stated. Based on her complaint, the Peelamedu police registered a man missing case. However, the police were not able to trace him as he had left his mobile phone and wallet at his rental house.
On Friday, the police received information about a body found on a railway track in Tirupur. A police team took Elizabeth and her husband, Siulvai Anthony, to Tirupur Government Hospital to ascertain the identity. They confirmed that the deceased was their son.
