Covid-19 cases in Kerala cross 8 lakh

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With 5,142 more people testing positive for Covid-19 in the state on Friday, the total number of cases reported till date in the state has risen to 8,01,111.
Among the new cases, 4,563 are cases of local transmission and the source of infection remains untraceable for 424. There are 67 medical or paramedical staff among those infected and 88 people have arrived from outside the state. At the same time, 5,325 patients have recovered from the disease. Meanwhile, 23 deaths occurred in the last few days were confirmed as due to Covid-19, taking the related death toll in the state to 3,257.
So far 50 people who have come from the UK after December 9 have been tested positive of Covid-19 and the samples have been sent to NIV, Pune. Of the results received so far, six people have been identified with the new strain. In 24 hours, 59,569 samples have been tested with a test positivity rate of 8.6%. So far 7,33,384 people have recovered from coronaviruswhile 64,236 patients are still undergoing treatment. Ernakulam reported the highest number of cases on the day, — 708. There are 440 hotspots in the state.
