The deceased Lakshmanan, an MSc degree holder from Aminjikarai, works in a private steel manufacturing unit in Ambattur, Egmore Railway police said.
During the enquiry, the railway police found that Lakshmanan had purchased a second-hand mobile for his mother through another woman. He may not have been aware that it was a stolen phone until Basin Bridge police called on his mother’s mobile for the phone details.
It looks like police were tracking IMEI number and after the phone was switched on investigators got alert and called on it to recover it. After police contacted his mother, Lakshaman himself contacted the cops and appeared at the station, police noted.
On Wednesday, police asked him details of the person from whom he bought the phone. Police suspect a fight might have started in the family over the purchase of a stolen phone.
On Thursday, Lakshmanan left the house and never returned. Later, the family came to know he had jumped in front of an EMU .
