On Thursday, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia of the Uttarakhand High Court was elevated as the new Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court.
The Union Law Ministry said that the Supreme Court Collegium had recently recommended the name of Justice Dhulia for the post. With the appointment of Justice Dhulia, now regular Chief Justices have been posted in all the 25 High Courts of the country. Prior to this, Acting Chief Justice was working in some High Court.
According to the Law Ministry, just before Justice Dhulia, Justice S. of Punjab and Haryana High Court. Muralidhar was made the Chief Justice of the Odisha High Court while Justice Hima Kohli of the Delhi High Court was promoted to the post of Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court.
Justice Pankaj Mittal of the Allahabad High Court was elevated to Chief Justice of the Joint High Court of the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, while Justice Sanjib Banerjee of the Kolkata High Court was made the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.
The Law Ministry also informed about the four vacancies in the Supreme Court and said that it is yet to await the recommendations of the collegium for the appointment to these posts. One of these vacancies is also that of Justice Ranjan Gogoi, who retired from the post of Chief Justice of India in November 2019.
Apart from them, Justice Deepak Gupta, Justice R. The posts vacated by the retirement of Bhanumathi and Justice Arun Mishra are also vacant in the apex court. At present, there are only 30 judges in place of the total of 34 judges in the apex court.
