BJP candidate Ravikant Sharma wins Chandigarh municipal corporation mayoral poll

CHANDIGARH: Chandigarh BJP on Friday clinched mayor seat of Chandigarh municipal corporation by big margin.
BJP candidate Ravikant Sharma defeated Congress candidate Devinder Singh Babla. In 27-member MC assembly, total 24 votes were polled. Out of these 24 polled votes, BJP’s Ravikant Sharma got 17 votes and Congress Devinder Singh Babla got 5 votes. Two votes were termed invalid.
BJP city MP Kirron Kher, who is not well and BJP’s Heera Negi, who had tested Covid-19 positive, could not come to the assembly to cast their votes and SAD lone candidate Hardeep Singh did not cast vote his vote.
Soon after the mayor election, Congress boycotted senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor election, alleging that the presiding officer Ajay Datta who belongs from RSS did not stop malpractice during election and BJP councillor clicked photos while casting their votes to show to their bosses later.
Congress Chandigarh president said that BJP had elected a mayor who is facing corruption charges and Congress will now take this battle before the citizens of Chandigarh.
“The officers of Chandigarh administration are also supporting BJP, which is condemnable. It is officers’ duty to ensure free and fair election, but every malpractice happened in the presence of Chandigarh DC”, Congress Chandigarh president Pardeep Chhabra said.
