FRANKFURT -- German registrations rose 9.9 percent to 311,394 vehicles in December, boosted by private customers ordering cars before a reduction in VAT ended on Dec. 31.
Tesla, Jaguar, Toyota and Alfa Romeo were among brands that had big gains, while Honda, Ford and Mini saw their registrations drop.
"The strong finish to the year can be explained by the expiry of the VAT cut," Reinhard Zirpel, president of the VDIK importers association, said in an emailed statement.
Two extra working days in December also benefited sales.
The German government introduced a six-month cut in the VAT rate to 16 percent from 19 percent on July 1 as part of a stimulus package to boost the economy after lockdowns last spring.
The VDIK said private registrations increased 45 percent in December, almost five times as much as the overall market.
The association said it expects "a difficult start" to 2021 after a countrywide lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus was extended to Jan. 31. The lockdown has forced showrooms to close.
