Plot
Parvathi aka Paaru, a restoration architect (Shraddha Srinath) leaves her home to avoid getting married. She comes to Kochi and stays in a house that previously belonged to Maara (Madhavan). The sketches that Maara left behind deeply impresses Paaru, who begins her mission to meet him. Who is Maara and how Paaru finally meets him forms the crux of the story.
Script & Direction
Maara, which is an adaptation of the Dulquer Salmaan starring Malayalam blockbuster Charlie, stay true to the essence of the original. This Madhavan starrer stands high with its heartfelt making style and beautiful character sketches. Director-writer Dhilip Kumar and co-writer Bipin have chosen a different route to narrate Maara's story, which makes it unique and highly appealing.
The main attraction of the film is its titular character, who is in his 40s and has a solid backstory (unlike Charlie, who is a more mysterious gypsy soul), which makes him more relatable. The film chooses to be ignorant of the mystery factor surrounding Maara after a point, which makes takes away the excitement factor at times. The second half, especially the climax portions lack the expected impact due to the deviations it took from the main plot.
Similarly, the story of Maara and Paaru begins on a high note but gets a rather underwhelming end. In short, the differences that were bought to the main plot and characters have emerged as both the strength and weakness of this Madhavan starrer. But, for the audiences who haven't watched the original, Maara is definitely going to be an extremely endearing movie experience.
Performances
Madhavan once again proves his impeccable acting skills and unmatchable onscreen charisma with the character Maara. The role of the middle-aged wandering artist is tailor-made for the talented actor. He instantly connects with the audiences with his earned performance.
Shraddha Srinath, on the other hand, has delivered a subtle yet brilliant performance as Paaru. The actress's exceptional ability to convey the slightest emotions with her expressive face deserves applause (a special mention to the voice artist who has dubbed for Shraddha). The rest of the star cast, including Sshivada, MS Bhaskar, Mouli, Seema, Maala Parvathy, and so on are perfect in their respective roles.
Technical Aspects
The brilliant cinematography by Dinesh Krishnan and Karthik Muthukumar is the biggest highlight of the movie. The extraordinary visuals, that does complete justice to the original, makes Maara a poetic experience. The art department too has done an excellent job.
Ghibran, the musician has done a decent job with the songs of the movie. But the background score could have been a bit more impactful.
Verdict
Maara is breath of fresh air in the Tamil film industry. This Madhavan-Shraddha Srinath starrer has its own minor flaws, but that doesn't prevent it from putting a smile on the face of the audience.
