Reopening of Indo- Myanmar border trade: India still not ready

Imphal, January 07 2021: Myanmar based trade-body Tamu Merchant Association's, a trader's body affiliated to Tamu-Kalay Borders Trade Chamber Of Commerce, Myanmar claim to re-open Indo- Myanmar border trade from January 6 that was reported in this newspaper quoting a news report of Myanmar Times newspaper confused traders of India as no notification or announcement in this connection has been issued from the Indian authority side.

Speaking to Imphal Times President of the North East Federation of International Trade (NEFIT Manipur chapter), M Chandrakishor Singh said that there has been no notification from the side of the Govt of India to reopen the border trade and moreover the border has been seal till January 31 .

''The news has confused traders of the Indian side as well as those in the Myanmar who are not members of Tamu Merchant Association" , said Chandrakishor Singh.

U-Hla-Naung, President of the Tamu-Kalay Border Trade Chamber Of Commerce Myanmar said while being contacted "that even though the Myanmar trade body want to open the border trade Indian govt side is not communicating to Myanmar authority" .

U- Hla- Naung further said, Myanmar is ready to reopen only Gate No 1 for goods/cargos following the SOP laid down by the authorities of both sides.

Regular travel of international passengers is also restricted through border.

Gate No.2 and will remain closed till March 2021" .

He said that the Indian authorities had not yet approached our Government to reopen trade through border.

The DC, Tengnoupal as well as Department of Trade, Government of Manipur must contact their counterparts in Myanmar to set up SOPs and guidelines and other necessary infrastructures at the border to be followed by the traders and common people of both the countries when reopened.

"Economic activities must go on through the border which gives livelihoods to thousands of people residing beside the border.

The concern authorities of both the countries are requested to take up immediate action regarding the same", U Hla Naung added.
