Detection of nine COVID-19 cases put Andaman in back-foot; additional staffs deputed

Port Blair, Jan 08 (UNI) Just when people of Andaman and Nicobar
Islands had breathed a sigh of relief, because of the decreasing
number of COVID-19 cases in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a major
shocker came from Little Andaman Island of South Andaman yesterday,
when at many as seven people were tested COVID-19 positive.
Other than these seven cases two more COVID-19 cases were detected in
South Andaman region, taking the number to 9 cases in one day.
Earlier from 1st Jan 2021 to 6th Jan 2021 only four new COVID-19
cases, in total, were reported in Andaman.
At Little Andaman Island, all these people were tested positive after
they came for Rapid Antigen testing site yesterday at Hut Bay before
availing the sailing of MV Coral Queen for Port Blair, scheduled on
9th Jan 2021.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman, Mr Suneel
Anchipaka has ordered sending of additional staffs including medical
staffs today to Little Andaman Island in Helicopter to contain the
situation.
Mr Suneel Anchipaka told UNI that contact tracing is presently on.
Meanwhile, sources in Hut Bay told UNI that all positive cases have
been shifted to Covid Care Centre and their family members have been
quarantined.
Off late a lot of travel from Little Andaman to Port Blair and vice
versa have been witnessed recently, which might be the reason behind
this increase in the number of cases.
With nine cases reported yesterday altogether, 4958 people have been
tested COVID-19 positive in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, out of which
4864 people have recovered. At present, there are 54 active cases of
COVID-19 in Andamans.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands are also maintaining a very high rate of
Test, which is 475078 tests per million.
