PUDUCHERRY: The state election commission, which has launched all efforts to hold local body polls in the Union territory, is conducting a special drive until January 13 to enable people to make any inclusion, deletion, correction and transfer of voters on the electoral roll.
Any objections or claims must be lodged before the electoral registration officers or designated officers on or before January 13. The qualifying date for inclusion of first-time voters has been decided as January 1, 2021, said state election commissioner Roy P Thomas in a release.
Thomas convened a meeting with commissioners of municipalities and commune panchayats of Puducherry and Karaikal in person and commissioner of Mahe region via video-conferencing to finalize publication of ward-wise electoral roll. The meeting resolved to publish the ward-wise final electoral roll in January 2021 in accordance with the Pondicherry Municipalities (Registration of Electors) Rules, 1974 and Pondicherry Village Panchayats (Registration of Electors) Rules, 1974 after giving the voters a last and final chance for the inclusion of a name or for submitting any objection to any entry.
Thomas said the voters could verify their name and related details on the ward-wise draft electoral roll already published and displayed at the locations notified by the electoral registration officers of the municipalities and commune panchayats concerned. The commission pointed out that the ward-wise electoral rolls are entirely different from the assembly electoral roll. The voters, who have enrolled for the electoral rolls of assembly elections, must ensure that their names are also included on the electoral rolls prepared for the civic bodies elections of Union territory as both the rolls are different.
