Heavy rain is likely to occur in several districts in the next 48 hours.

On Thursday, the State received an average of 2.4 cm rain and the week, 5.7 cm.

Cuddalore, Dindigul, Kallakurichi and Tiruvarur received at least 10 cm of rainfall on Thursday, while Thanjavur, Virudhunagar, Perambalur and Theni received moderate to heavy rainfall.

As per the Regional Meteorological Centre, districts like the Nilgiris, Theni, Dindigul, Coimbatore, Madurai, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam and Virudhunagar are expected to get moderate to heavy rain in the next 48 hours. The rainfall in Chennai will remain minimal, while light to moderate showers expected in the city on Friday and Saturday. The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy with maximum and minimum temperatures to be around 29 and 24 degrees Celsius respectively.

On Thursday, Nungambakkam recorded maximum and minimum temperatures of 29.4 and 24 degrees respectively; it was 29 and 23.5 in Meenambakkam respectively.

Several areas in the southern suburbs of Chennai remained waterlogged. Areas like Mudichur, Varadarajapuram, Raiyapah Nagar, Perumbakkam, Mappedu, Agaramthen and Nedukundram are still flooded with water, residents said.

People who vacated their houses fearing flooding during November returned to their houses just a few weeks ago but the unexpected January rain caused havoc.

“In the last month’s rain, government officials cleared the waterlogging immediately but now they are not visiting such places and no action has been taken yet,” said a resident of Perumbakkam, which is still under knee-deep water. The residents urged the government to find a permanent solution to roads getting flooded every year.
