AHMEDABAD: Even as robberies targeting jewellery shops in the eastern part of the city have exposed the security claims of police, a burglary of Rs 45 lakh was reported at a jewellery shop in New Ranip on Tuesday. Jitendra Shah, 51, a resident of Naranpura, filed a complaint with Sabarmati police stating that a man broke into his jewellery shop and decamped with gold ornaments weighing about 892 grams.
Shah said that the accused somehow managed to get the keys of his jewellery shop and stole the gold ornaments.
He said that he had gone to a bank near his shop in New Ranip on his scooter at about 1pm on Tuesday and had stored the jewellery shop’s keys in the glove box of his scooter.
After that, he had gone to his home in Naranpura and had returned to his shop at about 3.30pm.
When he reached his shop, he discovered that its shutter was open and the keys which he had stored in the glove box were lying on the counter of his shop.
He rushed inside and found that many drawers were open and someone had stolen the ornaments.
He called the police control room and a team of Sabarmati police reached the spot.
When Shah and cops checked CCTV footage, they found a man — aged around 35 and wearing a T-shirt, jeans, and sandals — calmly opening the drawers as if he knew where the ornaments were kept.
Police suspect that the accused carried out a recce of the shop before burgling it.
Police have registered a case of burglary and have begun an investigation.
