The Cape Cobras received a timely boost with the return of all-rounder Jason Smith ahead of the One Day Cup.

Smith last played a competitive match back in March during last year's coronavirus-interrupted One Day Cup and missed the first half of the 2020/21 season due to an ankle injury.

Cape Cobras coach Ashwell Prince is delighted to have one of his star all-rounders back in the selection mix.

"He was really unfortunate in pre-season ... we're delighted to have him back. His versatility gives us great options and balance to the team. Having missed so much of the season, I'm sure he's really hungry and raring to go."

Smith is ecstatic to get back to competitive cricket and aims to make an handy impact with the bat.

"It's been a very long wait for my return, I've been waiting patiently, doing my rehab and doing the work I need to do so I am extremely excited to get back out there and join the squad," said Smith.

"Everyone else's season started in October and my season only starts, now so I am more than ready to get going. My goal for this competition is to be right up there with the top run scorers and contribute with the ball as much as I can."

The One-Day Cup will commence this Saturday with a revised number of 15 matches set to take place in a bio-secure environment at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom.

The six competing franchises remain divided into two pools of three teams each.

Defending champions Dolphins share Pool A with the Titans and Knights and are scheduled to play each other between 9-16 January.

The Cape Cobras, Lions and Warriors make up Pool B and are set to get their campaign underway from 29 January-5 February.

The 50-over competition has been relocated to one stadium and will be played behind closed doors to minimise the risk of transmission of Covid-19.

The Cape Cobras play their opening game against the Lions on 29 January.
