Incident took place at eatery on Bengaluru-Mumbai Highway, on traumatised customer’s birthday; accused now in judicial custody.

In yet another case of criminal voyeurism, the waiter of a popular restaurant at Sutarwadi was caught red-handed recording a video of a girl in the washroom. The victim, who was out celebrating turning 18, made a nightmarish entry into adulthood, when she realised somebody was snooping on her and called for help. The hotel manager managed to catch the culprit, but he fled when they tried grabbing his mobile phone. He was later apprehended and acase has been registered against him at the Chaturshringi police station.

The victim had gone with her family to Happy da Punjab on Bengaluru-Mumbai Highway, for dinner at 9 pm on Monday. When she stepped into the washroom, her mother was waiting outside. The moment she realised somebody was shooting her, she shouted out to her mother and the two raised an alarm, which brought the manager of the restaurant rushing in. Informed of the issue, he immediately barged into the adjacent men’s loo and caught the waiter lurking there.

When he was brought to the victim and her mother, they tried grabbing the mobile phone from his hand. In the tussle that ensued, he managed to get away. The manager then called the police and reported the incident. Speaking to Mirror, the victim’s father informed, “Since the episode my daughter has become traumatised to go out such public places, particularly restaurants. She studies in a college. It was her birthday, so we went shopping at a mall, after which we went out for dinner to Happy da Punjab.”

Faulting the restaurant, he added, “The ladies and gents’ restrooms at Happy da Punjab are adjacent to each other. The partition between the two is partial, leaving a gap through which one can easily peep into the neighbouring women’s loo. It is simply preposterous for a restaurant of this size to have such a restroom structure that compromises the safety of women.”

Assistant police inspector Sangeeta Bhagwat of Chaturshringi police station said, “The accused, 18-year-old Hafiz Ansari, tried to escape but the police have nabbed him. On Wednesday, he was produced in court and has been remanded in judicial custody. A case has been registered under section 354A (sexual harassment) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).”

The manager of Happy da Punjab, Mayuresh Kshirsagar, observed, “We are very sorry about the incident. It was quite shameful. We have supported the family and the police on the matter. Renovation is underway at our hotel. We take women’s safety seriously. Though the waiter ran away, we summoned him back under the pretext that the matter had been sorted out. When he came in, we informed the police and handed him over to them.”
