New Delhi: Agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar met Baba Lakkhawal, the chief of Nanaksar Gurdwara in Punjab’s Ludhiana district, a day before the crucial talks with the protesting farmer unions and apprised him about the benefits of the new farm laws.
The two discussed possible resolution of the ongoing agitation, said people aware of the matter. Baba Lakkhawal, who has a great following in Punjab, asked Tomar to make the contentious farm laws optional for states, they said.
“Babaji was convinced with the benefits of the laws and told the minister that he will discuss with farmer leaders for a possible resolution. Babaji said the Centre may leave it up to the states to decide whether they want to implement these or not,” an agriculture ministry official, who was present at the meeting, told ET on condition of anonymity.
Tomar assured Baba Lakkhawal that the government would take every step to resolve the issue.
