Meghalaya on alert on bird flu, advisory issued

Shillong, Jan 7 (UNI) The Meghalaya government on Thursday alerted all district authorities to report any unusual death of poultry and migratory birds respectively.
However, the government has decided not to impose a banned import of poultry into the State as of now.
“The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department held a meeting and issued an advisory in which the Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) and also the forest department were alerted over the reported death of birds in some states of the country,” Joint Director Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, K.B.Sahkhar said.
Apart from the RRTs and the forest department, Sahkhar said the department has also issued advisory to the general public and the poultry farmers have also been alerted to report any unusual deaths.
Meghalaya has an estimated 35-37 lakh poultry population in the State.
“As of now we are not banning the import of poultry into the State, but we are taking precautions based on the reports of deaths of birds in some states of the country,” Sahkhar said.
When asked, he said there has been no report of such death of birds in the region, but it was felt necessary that adequate precautions were taken ahead of time.
“We are also very cautious not to cause any panic, especially to our poultry farmers. We are also alerting the poultry farmers to take bio-security measures and not allow any people from outside into their premises,” Sahkhar said.
However, the general advisory to the public is to report about any unusual death of poultry to the nearest veterinary dispensary or district officers.
Meanwhile, the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department have also alerted the public that if they consume poultry products they should cook it properly and also keep the standard protocols on sanitization in their mind.
